Kayla Gross (Pearl) is happy to be making her debut at Olney Theatre Center with her role as Pearl. She has performed in the productions of The Color Purple as Celie, Virginia Stage Company production of A Christmas Carol as Belinda Cratchit, Once on this Island as Ti Moune, The World Stage Theatre production of Amazing Grace as Princess Peyai, and a host of others. She is extremely excited to be here and is looking forward to embark upon this journey with an amazing cast!

Quiera Alegría Hudes (Book and Lyrics) is a writer, strong wife and mother of two, barrio feminist and native of West Philly, U.S.A. Hailed for her work’s exuberance, intellectual rigor, and rich imagination, her plays and musicals have been performed around the world. They include Water by the Spoonful, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama; In the Heights, winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical and Pulitzer Prize finalist; and Elliot, A Soldier’s Fugue, another Pulitzer finalist. Her most recent musical, Miss You Like Hell, appeared Off-Broadway at New York’s Public Theater. Originally trained as a composer, Hudes writes at the intersection of music and drama. She has collaborated with renowned musicians including Nelson Gonzalez, Michel Camilo, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Erin McKeown, and The Cleveland Orchestra. Hudes recently founded Emancipated Stories. It seeks to put a personal face on mass incarceration by having inmates share one page of their life story with the world.

Erin McKeown (Music and Lyrics) is a musician, writer, and producer known internationally for her prolific disregard of stylistic boundaries. Her brash and clever electric guitar playing is something to see. Her singing voice is truly unique —clear, cool, and collected. A familiar presence on NPR and the BBC, McKeown’s songs have also appeared on numerous television shows and commercials. She has spent the last decade and a half playing nearly 200 shows a year while releasing 9 studio albums and refining a distinct and challenging mix of American musical styles. McKeown’s first original musical, Miss You Like Hell, co-written with Tony & Pulitzer winner Quiara Alegría Hudes, had its world premiere in the fall of 2016 at the La Jolla Playhouse. It opened Off-Broadway at The Public Theater in the spring of 2018 where it was nominated for 3 Outer Critics Circle Awards (Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Score) and 5 Drama Desk Awards (including Best Music, Best Lyrics, Best Orchestrations). While a student at Brown University, Erin spent three years as an artist in residence at Providence, RI’s revolutionary community arts organization, AS220. An active voice on social justice issues and culture, Erin was a 2011-12 fellow at Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society, and she has blogged and hosted for WNYC New York Public Radio. A former board member of the Future of Music Coalition, McKeown has also worked closely with a range of non-profits focusing on her core concerns of media justice and immigration reform. ​

Breon Arzell (Choreographer) Most commonly known as an actor, Breon Arzell's breakout, and award-winning, premiere as a choreographer came with a Chicago production of The Hairy Ape. This Detroit native received his first training while at Miami of Ohio University. Based in Chicago, he has worked at various studios, schools, universities (DePaul and Northwestern), and theaters, including the Musical Theater Intensive at Goodman Theatre. Developing his own style of dance* and storytelling, Chicago credits include: The Color Purple' (Drury Lane Theatre), Head Over Heels & The Wiz (Kokandy Productions), The Total Bent (Haven Theatre), Rightlynd & The House That Will Not Stand (Victory Gardens Theatre), Marie Christine, Scottsboro Boys, and more. Also a writer, poet, and director, he is currently developing an original dancesical and the restoration of a historical black musical. Tom Ontiveros (Projection Designer) Tom consistently chooses projects affecting themes of social justice, diversity, and equity. Credits include designs at Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Berkeley Repertory, Cornerstone Theatre Company, Native Voices, Jail Guitar Doors, East West Players, Denver Center, Center Theatre Group, South Coast Repertory, Pasadena Playhouse, Geffen Playhouse and the La Jolla Playhouse. His work has also been presented at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Hungarian National Theatre, Phoenix Symphony, Ft. Worth Symphony Orchestra, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Park Avenue Armory, Kennedy Center, and L.A. Opera. Tom’s lighting and projection design for Pure Native will be presented this spring at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian. Tom is an Assistant Professor of Design at the University of La Verne, Ca.
